With spring and warm weather arriving I wanted a new look for my front door; something different and more unique than the typical round wreath.  So I headed to the thrift store to see if anything would catch my eye.  What I came home with was an old picture frame and visions of what I wanted to do with it.

My next stop was Hobby Lobby to peruse their store for items to use on my new project.  I purchased:

• white willow branches
• burlap and lace bow
• burlap flowers, both plain and colorful

Other supplies I purchased:

• “welcome” wood cut out.  I checked all of the local stores and could not find this! I found other cut out words, such as family, faith, etc. and I know I’ve seen “welcome” before, but could not find it when I needed it.  So I ordered it from Amazon here.
• Picture hanging kit and felt pads to protect door (or wall) from a local hardware store.  Or you can order the felt pads from Amazon here and the hanging kit here.

The steps I took to make my unique wreath:

• I started with a light sanding.
• Next I cleaned the frame getting off dust, dirt and grime.
• Painting my frame – I chose to paint my frame white because I had left-over Anne Sloan chalk paint just begging to be used!  I gave it a first coat of paint and allowed it to dry.

• Then a light sanding, followed  by a second coat of paint.

• When this was dry I did some sanding along the edges, etc. to give it a worn look.

• Next I applied Anne Sloan clear wax.  I put the wax on with a brush and wiped off all the excess with a nice clean rag.
• I allowed it to dry overnight and went over it with a rag several times, buffing it to a nice finish.

• Now the decor!  I cut off the ends of the willow branches and arranged the cut pieces on the back of the frame getting the look I wanted.

• Then I got out my very old and faithful glue gun and heavily glued each twig in place on the back of the frame. Not so much that the glue ran down onto the frame, but enough to securely hold them in place.
• Next I glued the bow onto one corner of the frame.
• (My sweet husband spray painted my “welcome” sign for me with the orange spray paint I picked out.)  Now I glued my “welcome” into place on the frame.
• The flowers!  I layered my petals using dabs of hot glue, putting 2 or 3 petals together into pretty flowers.

• Glue the flowers onto the twigs.
• Attach the picture hanging kit to the back of the frame following the instructions included with it.
• I placed small white stick on felt pads all around the frame to keep it from scratching the front door.

I was so happy with the way it turned out!  I think it gave my front door the perfect touch of spring.

My door is under a porch so it’s difficult to get a bright, pretty picture, but in person it looks great!
