homemade pretzelsMy grandchildren really like pretzels.  Do yours?  They like the straight ones, the curly ones and the large pretzel sticks, which we sometimes eat for lunch with peanut butter to dip them in!  So today when they were over we decided to try our hand at making homemade pretzels from scratch.

They turned out good, not perfectly shaped, but quite tasty.  And the kids were proud of their individual creations!

To make our pretzels we used these ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cups warm water
  • 1 package yeast
  • 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons rock salt or margarita salt

And then we did this:

  • Pour water into a large mixing bowl
  • Sprinkle yeast on top of the water and stir until well blended
  • Add 1 cup of flour, salt and sugar to the yeast mixture and beat with a wooden spoon
  • Add the rest of the flour, one cup at a time until you have a soft workable dough
  • Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes
  • Cut the dough in half; cut each half into 6 equal pieces
  • With floured hands, roll each piece of dough back and forth between the palms of your hands to form a dough rope which is 12 to 15 inches long
  • Place dough on a greased baking sheet about 3 inches apart and shape into a pretzel
  • In a small bowl, mix together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water
  • Brush the egg mixture on each pretzel
  • Sprinkle salt on pretzels
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown
  • When removed from the oven, lightly brush with melted butter
  • Enjoy!

Baking is something I really enjoy doing with my grandchildren.  Not only is it fun and relationship building, but it’s good for kids in other ways as well.  It helps to build self confidence, builds math skills and teaches a life skill, just to name a few.

Teresa, my grandchildren and I also love pretzels, but we haven’t tried making them ourselves–yet. Thanks for co-hosting #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty.
