Poplar Forest
In the very heart of Virginia lies some distinctive homes belonging to some very special people; homes of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe.  Of these three homes, Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s uniquely styled masterpiece is probably the most famous and rightly so.

But did you know that Thomas Jefferson had a second home only 93 miles from Monticello?  This home is called Poplar Forest.  The acreage it sits upon and the original home were inherited from his father-in-law, but the home that sits upon it now is one of Jefferson’s own unique designs.

Homes collageWhat special day do we celebrate every year in February?  Hint – it’s not Valentines Day!  This special day, or actually two days, hold a place of much greater value in our lives.  These days have great historical significance.

Every year in February we celebrate Presidents Day and in addition, the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the United States.

Since moving to the east coast I have grown to have a deep love of American history.  There is so much here to see and learn of the struggles our forefathers went through to bring this great nation into existence.

Better small pictureHistory and scenic beauty truly do come together where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers meet in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia!  It’s the perfect area for a weekend getaway or day excursion as my husband, Paul and I discovered on our recent visit there.  The town of Harpers Ferry sits on an area of land that is at the eastern-most point of West Virginia and is bordered by the Potomac River on one side and the Shenandoah River on the other.  These two beautiful rivers make it a favorite spot for rafting, canoeing, tubing and fishing.  In addition to water sports, it’s also a popular area for mountain biking and rock climbing.  For enthusiastic hikers, the Appalachian Trail passes right through the heart of town. read more….
