Dog with bones 3 smallestToday was my day with my grandchildren and once again in preparation for spending the day with them I was looking for a fun craft to do together.  I found a recipe for making dog bones that was simple and since we do love our dogs, I thought they would like making a special treat for them.  We needed to find dog bone shape cookie cutters and I didn’t know where I could get them locally.Dog bone kit  Quite by coincidence, I happened to stop in at Books-A-Million and low and behold there was a kit for making dog bones!  It contained a book with many different recipes, four dog bone cookie cutters and doggie bags in case you want to give your bones as gifts, or in our case, so the kids could each carry home their own doggie bag for their dog, Emmy.  The cost fit right in with my budget at $10.00. Ingredient collage

I chose the basic recipe for today’s adventure.  It only called for three ingredients which most of us have lingering in our cupboards:

  •  2 ½ cups of wheat flour
  • ¼ cup of beef broth
  • 1 egg
  1. Mix the ingredients all together. The kids will need some help with this because it is very stiff. You may have to just dig in with your hands!  Dust the surface you will be using to roll out your dough with flour.
  2. Divide the dough between the kids and allow them to try and roll it out with a rolling pin. Here again, if they are young they will need some help because it requires some pressure on the rolling pin.
  3. Allow the kids to cut out the shapes with the cookie cutters
  4. Place on a cookie sheet
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees.
  6. Give one to your dog and watch him gobble it up!
  7. Store the remainder in an airtight container

The kids loved making these.  The dough is very stiff, so they did need some help with mixing it and rolling it out.  The stiffness didn’t hamper their enthusiasm, they really had fun trying to do it on their own.

The kit included little doggie bags so the kids could take home the special treats they made for their best friend, Emmy.  Our dog, Gunnar was very happy with the finished product too!

As a word of warning, many dogs do have allergies to wheat so I suggest limiting the number of bones they are allowed to eat each day.

This was fun and easy, so if you are interested in making natural dog bones for your pet, give this a try!
