My grandkids love Halloween. Whether they like the costumes or the candy more, I’m not sure! I do know that they also love Halloween crafts and I enjoy coming up with crafts we can do together.
I’ve gathered together a few crafts that I think you will enjoy making with your grandchildren. But before we get into them, I would like to add that if you don’t have time to gather supplies or maybe you just don’t want to, you can find kits at your local hobby store that have everything needed to put together easy projects. I bought Halloween stamps and a monster kit at Hobby Lobby and my grandchildren had lots of fun with those too.

A few of the many kits that are available:
Halloween Bulbs…
Supplies:
- Clear plastic Christmas bulbs
- Acrylic paint in Halloween colors
- Glow in the dark Halloween stickers
- Puff paint
- Something you can use to place the bulb in to dry that will allow excess paint to run out.
- I used an egg carton with the bottom cut out of each section.
- I then placed it on a light aluminum disposable grate that is actually for grilling. It was very easy to bend the edges down giving me an elevated surface to set the egg carton on.
- Place newspapers underneath!
What to do:
- Remove the top of the plastic bulb.
- Pour some paint into the bulb.
- Turn the bulb around in your hands allowing the paint to slowly cover the entire inside of the bulb. You may find you need to add additional paint.
- Place the bulb upside down in your “drying rack” and allow it to thoroughly dry.
- Let your grandchildren put their choice of Halloween glow in the dark stickers on the outside of the bulb.
- Put the top back into the bulb.
- Tie yarn or ribbon around the bulb hanger and hang your completed project!
*Check your local craft store for the plastic bulbs and stickers. I found mine at Hobby Lobby.
A variation of this craft is to use glow-in-the-dark paint on the inside, draw a design on the outside and fill in the design with puff paint. That is what I did here to create a pumpkin. Older kids would be great at this, while the younger ones would do best with the stickers.
Spaghetti Spider Web…
Every spider needs a web right?
Supplies:
- white craft glue
- shallow bowl
- 1 cup cooked spaghetti, cooled
- waxed paper
What to do:
- Pour some glue into the shallow bowl.
- Dip a noodle into the glue.
- Hold the noodle over the bowl and allow excess glue to drip off.
- Let your child arrange the noodles on the wax paper in his/her version of a spider web design.
- When the “web” is dry, lift it carefully off the paper and hang it up.
*You can print a spider web design from the internet and place it under the wax paper so your child can follow the design with his/her noodles. Or just let them create, create, create!
Word of caution! Be careful with how much glue you leave on the wax paper around your noodles. As you can see, we left too much glue, which made for a rather messy looking web!
String Art Spider Web…
Supplies:
- Black or orange yarn
- Glue
- Balloon
- Plastic spiders
- Hot glue gun
- Newspaper or some other kind of paper you can protect your work surface with.
What to do:
- Cut yarn into 20 pieces, each one 8 feet long
- Blow up the balloon.
- Pour equal parts of glue and water into a bowl.
- Mix well
- Place yarn into the bowl and make sure it’s covered well with the glue. (hint: hold onto the end of the yarn when you do this.)
- Pull yarn slowly from the bowl with one hand and use two fingers on the other hand to remove the excess glue from the yarn, allowing it to run back into the bowl.
- Wrap the yarn around the balloon in irregular patterns.
- Repeat until all the yarn is used.
- Hang balloon to dry. (Glue/water mixture will continue to drip so make sure your newspaper is underneath it.)
- When the yarn is completely dry, pop the balloon and using the tweezers remove it from the inside of the “web”.
- Using the hot glue gun attach the spiders to the web.
*An adult should always be the one to use the hot glue gun for safety!
Paper Plate Spider…
Supplies:
- 2 paper plates
- crayons
- hole punch
- 2 feet of yarn
- black construction paper
- white craft glue
How to make them:
- Color the front of one paper plate and the back of the other paper plate with a black crayon.
- Cut the black construction paper into strips; you need 8 for the spider’s legs.
- Glue the black strips onto the back of the white paper plate. These are the spider’s legs. Evenly space them 4 on each side.
- Glue the two paper plates together.
- Punch a hole into the center of the paper plates. Knot the end of the yarn and thread it through the hole from the front to the back.
- Hang your spider up!
This was actually the first craft that we made, but somehow I lost the pictures!
In closing…
Whether you choose to make one of these Halloween crafts or go the easier route and purchase a kit, the important thing is that you’re spending time with your grandchildren and having fun together. Even if your projects don’t turn out as good as you would have liked, and from my experience they usually don’t, the grandkids will be totally pleased with them and that’s what counts. So create and enjoy!
